Frank has competed and trained all over the world in MMA, Submission Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu jitsu, Kickboxing and Muay Thai. He has held a Black Belt in Zen Karate-Do since 1993 from Lyle Cheney of Cheney’s Karate Studios where he was also an amateur kickboxer. He trained Jiu-Jitsu with Sensei Dave Maciver from 1993-95, studied Muay Thai with World Champion Mike Miles and was on Team Canada while at National Kickboxing in 1995.
His BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-jitsu) training began in Toronto, Canada with Shah Franco and Sylvio Behring. Shah Franco, a pioneering MMA coach in Canada was a former World Karate Champion and Canada’s first 4th degree BJJ Blackbelt. Mestre Sylvio Behring, a 7th degree red and white belt is one of the most sought after Jiu-jitsu coaches in the world. Frank received his BJJ Black Belt in 2009 from the Franco/Behring Jiu-Jitsu Alliance.
From 2004 to 2010, Frank switched his focus from competing to becoming a world class trainer and began training and instructing at AMC Pankration in Seattle Washington under MMA legend Matt Hume.
In 2010 Frank moved to Los Angeles and started training and teaching at MMA’s most prestigious referee Big John McCarthy’s Ultimate Training Academy in Valencia. While At BJMUTA He also coached MMA and BJJ at The Fight Academy in Pasadena. In 2011 he was given the opportunity to be the Lead Coach at the newly opened TapouT Los Angeles Training Center. It was there that he started the official fight team NZT Pankration.From 2012-2014 he opened and operated NZT MMA/ No limitZ Training Center.
Since 2015 Frank has been teaching at various Martial Arts schools across North America. He is currently at Matador MMA where he is teaching Submission Wrestling, No Gi Jiu-Jitsu, children’s and adults Muay Thai, and helping to build the MMA team.
Championships & Tournaments
• Frank “Johnny Kage” Colcher started competing in Taekwondo and Karate in 1988, Kickboxing and Muay Thai in 1992, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in 1997 and made the jump to MMA in 1999. He retired in 2004 with the WCT Lightweight Belt. He was the number one contender for the lightweight MFC title and the former IFC Battleground 2000 Champion.
Notable Athletes He Has Trained
At AMC MMA Frank was one of Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson’s first coaches from 2005-09. DJ is the UFC Flyweight Champion and also the pound for pound greatest MMA fighter in the world. He was the BJJ/MMA coach of 5 Time World Kickboxing Champion Kathy Long, while she was making the transition to MMA.
He also trained up and coming Professional MMA phenom Ozzy Diaz for all three of his Amateur titles. Trained Canadian Flyweight Austin Ryan (6-0) for his first pro title. Currently he is working alongside Jesse Richardson with Donald Magboo for his upcoming title fight.
